On January 31 the Wertz Warriors set out on their 900- mile, seven day journey from Mt. Clemens to Petoskey. In 2009 the Wertz Warriors and Special Olympics Michigan lost a great friend and supporter, Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. In celebration of his life, the 2010 State Winter Games are dedicated him.
A special tribute video will be played during the Opening Ceremonies that will honor the former Wertz Warriors spokesperson. He is truly missed and his legacy will live on through the Wertz Warriors and their dedication to Special Olympics Michigan. The Wertz Warriors endure Michigan's frigid winter weather to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan. Since their start in 1982, they have raised over $7,917,000 to help fund the State Winter Games, which will be held in Traverse City February 2-5.
This year, the Wertz Warriors hope to raise $350,000. They will give approximately 900 Special Olympics Michigan athletes rides on snowmobiles in just 90 minutes at the State Winter Games. The Warriors are constantly looking for new members. If interested please contact the Wertz Warriors at wertzwarriors@msn.com or (586) 954-9770.
