2010 Inspirational Athlete

(Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) May 21, 2010 - Nicholas Boyd of Big Rapids, Michigan is a perfect example of what a good role model should be. He is a persistent, mature and well-rounded gentleman with a big heart and a “can-do” attitude that he displays at all times. Nick’s ability to inspire and motivate others earned him the title of the “Special Olympics Michigan 2010 Inspirational Athlete of the Year.” 2010 marks Boyd’s 22nd year of involvement with Special Olympics Michigan, and could be one of his favorites yet. He was named the winner of this prestigious award on Friday, June 4, during Closing Ceremonies at the 2010 State Summer Games at Central Michigan University in front of his family, friends and nearly 2,500 other athletes. Nicholas knew he had been nominated for the award and he4 stood with his fingers crossed just before his name was announced.

Winners of the “Inspirational Athlete” award must exemplify the athlete oath, “Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
According to Patricia Rosales, Nick’s Area Director, “Nick always strives to
do his very best and is very proud of all he’s accomplished. He has a very

infectious attitude relating to all those around.” Rosales says, “Whether sports practices, competitions or fundraising, Nick gives his all. As a past athlete representative on our Area Management Team, Nick is very good at listening and communicating with his fellow athletes and is not afraid to speak up and say what he thinks.”

Boyd will have the honor of running the last leg of the torch run in Kelly/Shorts Stadium to light the Flame of Hope at Opening Ceremonies of the 2011 State Summer Games. He will also be presented with a running jacket at Closing Ceremonies from the Law Enforcement Torch Run and become an honorary member. We congratulate Nicholas Boyd on this accomplishment!

Competition at the State Summer Games continues for much of the day on Saturday, June 5.
